Confronting Power
Creating a Just and Healthy CommunityNew offering!
Be a part of the first dialogue group focusing on the impact of power and injustice, and how we can confront our harmful conditioning.
Wednesday 7:00 to 8:30 pm EST - February 17 - April 28th
Why are there so many divisions in our society? Why is there so much sorrow and injustice? Does this need to be the case? Do you ever wonder about the reality and entrenchment of injustice and division, and how they influence our everyday lives overtly and subtly within our culture? Racism, sexism, poverty, war, and the destruction of the environment are some of the many issues that impact us, whether individually or collectively.
Our time together will start by reviewing shared group agreements and dialogue concepts, followed by a video or reading, dialogue and some journaling. Some likely dialogue questions and topics are:
What are the differences between prejudice, bias, stereotypes and discrimination? We will come to understand what makes each of those unique in order to have a constructive dialogue around power and injustice.
What is structural racism? What is a caste system and how does that relate to how we see and understand race and poverty?
If there is a hierarchical system, what does it have to do with me?
Are we part of a deeply embedded hierarchical system meant to keep a power structure in place?
Is our educational system directly impacting these issues? How does our educational system impact a child and how they see themselves?
What is hierarchy and power? Is hierarchy natural or a false belief? What about power? If one is using power to coerce and manipulate and abuse others, is this power?
How are racism, sexism, poverty, and environmental degradation connected to broader cultural roots of divisive ideologies?
Is nature part of the voiceless? How do we listen?
